Will you do your part?

VoteTuesday Nov. 7 is election day. In a very real way, the future of our country will be decided as one person at a time goes to the polls to express his / her feelings on issues of importance in the community, in the state, and in the nation. And I’m not just talking about deciding who will represent our personal and collective interests over the next several years (although that will have a tremendous impact on the quality of life we enjoy).

What about those specific issues? In many locales, there are issues that affect the real estate market directly (as well as indirectly.) Eminent domain issues are being decided in our area. There are also property tax issues on the ballot here. In many places there are local zoning issues, and other things that affect us directly.

When I was about to turn 18, my father sat me down and told me as bluntly as he knew how (and believe me, he knew how to be blunt) “literally millions of Americans have given their lives to protect your right to vote. If you fail to vote, you dishonor them. Further, if you don’t exercise your right to vote, you give up all right to complain about (or even discuss) the things that flow out of that election. I don’t want to hear a single word about these things if you can’t muster enough interest to get out there and help yourself.”

I’ll be there Tuesday (like I have at every other opportunity) expressing my opinion. I hope you’ll be there too. Self government doesn’t work without self-involvement.
